Class Calendar: Class is held on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 10:00 AM to 11:45 AM.

 

Course Description: This course is an introduction to the spatial science of geography. The special aspects of the science are examined such as: the relationship of humans to their environment, land use patterns, the human-built landscape, population and demographics, and other cultural and physical adjustments that humans make to their environment.

 

Course Objectives: To gain an understanding of the concepts of geography through a combination of lectures, videos, written exercises, in-class exercises and discussions.

 

Required Text: “Human Geography: Landscapes of Human Activity”, Fellman, Getis, and Getis. Seventh Edition.

 

Attendance Policy: This course will involve classroom discussion, in-class and take home exercises, and information outside of the text. Therefore, I encourage all students to attend every class and be on time. Mandatory attendance is required when an exam or quiz is scheduled. If you know that you will miss a mandatory class please let me know in advance so that a make-up date can be scheduled. You will be required to make-up any tests or quizzes missed within a week of the test date. You will be responsible for any written exercises that are missed. Ten percent of your exercise and/or paper grade will be deducted for every class day it is not completed after the due date. In class exercises cannot be made up.

 

Withdrawal Policy: Withdrawal is allowed up until July 2, 2003. Be sure to get my signature on the withdrawal form after June 11, 2003.  If you do not formally withdrawal from the course you receive an F for the course.

 

Policies: The MCCC Student Code of Conduct in the Student Handbook is a binding part of this syllabus. Cheating will not be tolerated. College practice on weather cancellations will be followed.

Grading: There will be two (2) exams consisting of multiple choice, true-false, matching, and short answer/short essay questions. The final exam will not be comprehensive. The  exam you do best on will  be worth 30% of your grade; the other exam will be worth 25% of your grade. There will be five location quizzes that are worth 15% of your grade. There will be six (6) written exercises that are worth 15% of your grade. There will be a short paper that is worth 10% of your grade. In-class exercises will be worth 5% of your grade.

 

Grades: 90 – 100% A, 80 – 89% B, 70 – 79% C, 60 – 69% D, Below 60% F

 

Class Cancellation: In the event of inclement weather or other emergency, the MCCC School Closing Code is 320. Announcements will be made on KYW (1060 AM) and other local stations.
