1.    PCs are dumb

Consider the following characters that look alike to us

·    zero 0          =    00110000

·    upper case O   =    01001111

·    lower case o   =    01101111   

 

2.    But they are very fast

·        1,000,000,000 instructions per second

·        1 instruction in a “nano second”

·        it would take me 30+ years to do 1,000,000,000 instructions

 

3.    They have a perfect Memory

·        IF you save your work!!!!!!!!

·        C: ¹ RAM

 

What happens when a PC starts up

·        POST

·        Find The operating system

·        load the operating system

 

Drive Glossary

·        C: - local to the PC where you are working

·        H: - your home drive

o       accessible anywhere on campus

o       you can do anything i.e. save, change or delete files

·        S: - the shared drive

o       accessible anywhere on campus

o       you can only read or copy files – NOT CHANGE THEM

o       our material will be in S:/courses/cis110 . . .
