  • opened the first birth control clinic in U.S. because of large number of unwanted pregnancies in the working poor

• Lavina Dock was a writer & political activist

  • early feminist devoted to women’s suffrage
  • participated in protest & demonstrations until passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920
