CIS110: Computer Information Systems for Management

Description: This course introduces non-computer science majors to fundamentals of computer hardware, software, and their integration into management information systems. Included are hands-on applications using commercially prepared software on PCs including Microsoft Excel (spreadsheet), Access (database), Word (word processor), PowerPoint (presentation graphics), e-mail and the Internet. Credits: 3 Prerequisite: Students enrolled in ESL010, ENG010, REA018, or MAT010, or a lower level of these courses, may not be enrolled in this course. Format: Online version (YO sections)
Online courses are instructor led. While this course does not have a specific meeting time throughout the week, assignments are due by specified deadlines during each course week.
Traditional Face-to-Face
This course meets twice a week. Homework and other assignments are completed outside of class meeting time. Assignments have specific due dates throughout the course week.Textbooks (required): Textbooks for this course are bundled with additional material required for the course.

CIS111: Computer Science I: Programming / Concepts

Description: This course introduces students to fundamental techniques, concepts, and vocabulary of procedural programming and computer science. Emphasis is placed on programming in a high-level computer language such as Java or C++. This is the first course for computer majors. Credits: 3 Prerequisite: MAT 100 or MAT 115 with a "C" or better. Students who have not met this prerequisite should consider CIS1101. Format: Traditional Face-to-Face

Description: This course introduces the student to the structure of the Internet and use of Internet research techniques and web publishing skills using HTML. Resources discussed will include File Transfer Protocol (FTP), Telnet, and the World Wide Web (WWW). Electronic mail (E-mail), various means of accessing the Internet, research skills, security, and "netiquette" issues surrounding the appropriate use of such networks will be discussed. Students will also create web pages using HTML. Considerable hands-on-experience will be provided. Credits: 3 Prerequisite: CIS 105, or CIS 110, or CIS 111, or CIS 155 or equivalent experience. Description: This course reviews and applies traditional (life cycle) systems development methodologies implemented by project teams and including reporting responsibility to a systems development steering committee. The life cycle followed incorporates an initial investigation, a feasibility study, systems analysis, systems design, technical design, program specification, and implementation planning. Description: This course will provide an overview of Microsoft Office and several desktop operating systems, which are typically supported on a local area network. Software covered will include command line interfaces, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access, and Windows. Additional topics will include the Internet, alternative desktop operating systems, networking basics, software licensing, file management, hardware selection, software integration, and viruses.
