Calculator: A calculator similar to the TI-30X IIS is recommended for this course.

Course Objective: This course is designed to help the student develop a feeling of confidence with beginning Algebra, to provide the necessary background for an intermediate Algebra course, and to develop the student's ability to translate verbal statements into mathematical symbols and

Statements.

Prerequisites: A math placement test recommendation of "MAT 011" or MAT 010 with a minimum grade of "C."

Topics covered: A review of whole number operations, fractions, decimals, and percents; signed numbers; properties of exponents; simplifying, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, algebraic expressions; solving equations (linear and literal); solving inequalities; simple factoring and algebraic fractions; simplifying radicals; word problem application.

Learning Objectives:

• Upon successfully completing this course, students should have the following knowledge and skills:
• Use signed numbers, variables, distributive property, combining like terms appropriately.
• Solve linear and literal equations.
• Solve applications of linear equations and percentages.
• Solve inequalities and their applications.
• Understand and use the Cartesian coordinate system to graphing lines: vertical and horizontal lines, x and y-intercepts, changes to the horizontal and vertical scales of a graph.
• Appropriately apply slope and understand applications of linear graphs.
• Develop models for applications of linear graphs.
• Use the calculator appropriately to solve growth and decay problems with exponents, finance problems and scientific notation.
• Convert between scientific notation and decimal notation.
• Apply properties of exponents.
• Manipulate and solve multiplication, division, addition, subtraction of algebraic fractions, and fractional equations.

• Solve applications of ratio and proportion problems.
• Compute the addition, subtraction and multiplication of polynomials.
• Use the calculator to approximate square roots.
• Use and apply the quadratic formula appropriately.
• Graph quadratic equations and apply appropriately to quadratic applications.
• Understand common factors, factoring trinomials with a leading coefficient of one, factoring the difference of perfect squares, and solve equations by factoring
