John Maynard Keynes was perhaps
the greatest economist of this century. In 1936 he wrote: "The ideas of
economists, both when they are right and when they are wrong are more powerful
than is commonly understood. Indeed, the world is ruled by little else. Practical
men, who believe themselves to be quite exempt from any intellectual
influences, are usually the slaves of some defunct economist. Mad men in
authority, who hear voices in the air, are distilling their frenzy from some
academic scribbler of a few years back."
My
fascination with economics is reflected in the truth of these words. What lies
behind the graphs, abstract theories, and jargon, are the secrets of how the
world works. The secrets are about us, you and me; our interactions, our
decisions, and the way we collectively influence the world around us. In the
global community these secrets, this understanding, has never been more
important. Economics is a discipline in thinking. Join me in discovering a new
facet of our world.
