1.
Attend class regularly. Bring the textbook, course outline and learning
objectives to each class. Bring the lab book as assigned.
2.
Read the assignment prior to class. Using the learning objectives
as an outline, underline important information in pencil in the text. It
may be helpful to read the end of chapter summary and questions prior to
reading the chapter to aid in content focus.
3.
Complete definitions while reading. Add to the definitions in class.
4.
Reread class notes within 24 hours. Before the next class, reread the text
highlighting the information presented in class, using the margins in the
text to add class information. In the notes, supplement with information
from the book with page references for figures. It may be helpful to use
different colored inks to distinguish the class notes from the text information.
5.
While studying, make a list of specific questions about material which
is difficult to understand.
6.
Make a set of flash cards with definitions, study questions on one side
and their explanations on the reverse side.
7.
Try to generate mnemonic devices to remember information.
8.
Participate in a cooperative study group which meets regularly, weekly
or biweekly.
9.
Think about how you learn. Do you prefer auditory, tactile, or visual cues?
Read
notes, text, definitions into an audiotape, rewrite notes, make notations
in the notes with pictures or figures representing the theme.
10.
Participate in class.
11.
Save all quizzes and articles either in the pockets of the class notebook
or in a separate pocket folder. Do not use the textbook as a storage place.
12.
Use time wisely. Often, multiple "snippets" of time (periods of 10-30 minutes
daily) enhance the learning process better than longer less frequent study
periods.
13.
Make a tentative daily and weekly schedule reflecting time use. Remember,
for a college science class, a minimum of two hours of study time is
recommended for each one hour of class time.
