Class Policies

Consistent attendance is required for successful completion of this course. If, however, it is necessary for you to miss a class, you will be responsible for acquiring notes and verifying assignments from a fellow student. If you miss more than six classes during the semester, your final grade will be reduced by one letter grade. (Extreme hardship cases should be discussed personally with the professor.)

Being punctual is a basic courtesy. If you must be late, please enter the classroom quietly and take a seat immediately. Any explanations you wish to make should be made after class.

Cell phones are a part of our lives now. If you cannot turn off your cell phone for the duration of the class, please keep it handy on your desk so that you don't have to fumble around for it while it is ringing. Immediately and quietly leave the classroom to finish your call. (And if the classroom door is open, please move away so that we don't listen to your call.)

Food and beverages are allowed in class provided that you are discreet about consuming them and that you dispose of all waste before leaving the classroom. If people leave their coffee cups, etc. lying around the classroom, I will ban all food and beverages.

Plagiarism is handled according to the procedures outlined in the college handbook. If you want to quote another author, do yourself a favor and document the original writing properly.

The syllabus is subject to change at the discretion of the professor, but such changes will be made known to the class with appropriate advance notice. With luck, the syllabus will also be available online by the end of September.

A minimum of eight papers will be written during this semester. Each paper MUST be typed in the following manner:

8 1/2 x 11 white paper
Double-spaced lines
1 1/2 inch margins on all sides
Black ink
Standard, legible font (for example, Times New Roman)
Font Size 12
Type on one side of paper only
Student name and course time on each page
Multiple pages stapled together in upper left corner
Approximately 3 -4 pages long

Papers not conforming to this standard will be returned without grading.

Each essay will be graded according to quality of content, organization, development, and use of language. See attached rubric for the standards I will use for scoring essays.

Ideally, papers will be submitted online to my email address (CWNohe@aol.com) in Microsoft Word or Acrobat Reader format. If that is not possible, papers may be faxed to me (215-542-8836 any time of day) or submitted during class.

Regardless of the means you choose to submit papers, they must be received by me by midnight of the day they were due.

If you realize you are not going to be able to make a deadline, I will grant a 48-hour extension if you notify me 48 hours in advance of the deadline. In other words, if on Monday you realize you can't make a Wednesday deadline, I will give you until Friday if you have notified me in advance. This offer applies only once or twice during the semester. Continued late submission of papers will negatively affect your grade regardless of the quality of your work. (Extreme hardship cases should be discussed personally with me; remember the key word, extreme.) This policy is designed to be fair to those students who do make deadlines faithfully.

Grammar and punctuation will be reviewed as issues are identified, and periodic quizzes will be given. Notice of these quizzes will be given on an ad hoc basis.

The "final exam" will be an in-class essay on one of several topics that will have been previewed in class.
