I. Course Description:
A. 3 semester hours credit course, meets 3 hours per week.
B. Required course for physical education majors.
C. Catalogue description: This course is designed to develop in students safety consciousness, civic responsibility in emergency situations, awareness of the import role of a citizen responder in any community's Emergency Medical Services system, and basic first aid skills and knowledge. It orients students to approach all emergency situations utilizing the four emergency action principles and prepares them to administer proper first aid when sudden injuries or illness occur. American National Red Cross certification in First Aid; Responding to Emergencies and in Adult CPR are awarded upon satisfactory completion.
II. Course Justification:
A. As a requirement for Health and Physical Education Majors: Knowledge of first aid and safety is seen as essential for any student enrolled in this program in-as-much as:
1. Physical Education is a high accident risk profession.
2. Those entering this profession will have legal responsibility for the health and safety of those whom they serve.
B. As a course offering for any student: Essential knowledge of first aid and safety is seen as highly desirable for all students - indeed for all adults, since sudden illnesses and injuries are risks for everyone, regardless of age, life style or profession.
III. Course Objectives:
A. To increase safety consciousness and develop attitudes to prevent and reduce accidents.
B. To develop the necessary knowledge, skill and confidence needed in administering proper first aid for victims of sudden illnesses or injuries.
C. To develop the necessary knowledge and skill needed in determining the nature and severity of an accident or sudden illness.
D. To engender a philosophy of first aid as a civic responsibility.
E. To identify and develop an understanding of the legal protection and implications involved with first aid.
F. To prepare the student to meet certification requirements in First Aid: Responding to Emergencies and Adult CPR with the American National Red Cross.
IV. Course Content: will generally follow our textbook (expanded).
V. Required Textbook:
The American Red Cross First Aid; Responding to Emergencies, Revised Forth Edition, 2006, StayWell, . ISBN 1-58480-322-3. Text should be purchased from the College Bookstore (or any Red Cross office or online). Be sure you get the revised 4th edition. Personal copy required for American Red Cross certification
VI. Evaluation:
Student's final grade will be determined by the application of the following formula.
24% - Mid-term written exam
24% - Mid-term skill exam
24% - Final written exam
24% - Final skill exam
6% - Projects (to be described in separate hand-out).
2% - Class participation, including regular attendance, active class involvement and possible quizzes.
Students missing classes equal to more then three weeks will be dropped from
the classes roll and given an F. Withdrawal slips will not be signed after
the 10th week of class. There will be at least a one week
notice before an exam. Students missing an exam for reason must contact Dr.
Black to arrange a make-up within one week of the scheduled exam. No make-up
exams or missed project reports will be allowed after that one week grace
period.

VII. Certification: (Optional)
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be recommended to the American National Red Cross for certification in First Aid; Responding to Emergencies and Adult CPR. Successful completion means the following:
A. Fulfilling the number of class hours for certification. "Cutting" more then four classes during the semester is considered excessive absences! The student will still receive college credit for the course by doing well on tests and exams, but will not be recommended for American Red Cross certification.
B. Students ending the semester with a final grade of "A" or "B" will receive American Red Cross certification.
C. Students ending the semester with a final grade of "C" may or may not receive American Red Cross certification at the discretion of the instructor based upon passing both skill tests and scoring 80% or better on the Red Cross certification questions.
D. Students ending the semester with a final grade of "D" or below will not receive American Red Cross certification.

The American National Red Cross charges a $10.00 "program fee" for making up certification cards. If you want your cards, you must give Dr. Black $10.00 and a stamped self-addressed envelop. Your cards will be sent to you as soon as we receive them.
